Execute Yang Cheng-fu’s Ten Keys to Tai Chu Chuan

YCF described the Ten Keys to Tai Chu to his disciple Chen Wei-ming, who wrote them down.

1.WRH adjusts a participant’s angles and position to achieve “sink the shoulders and elbows”.

2.WRH adjusts a participant’s angles and position to achieve “relax the waist and drop the hip”.

3.WRH adjusts a participant’s angles and position to achieve “hollow the chest and round the back”.

4.WRH adjusts a participant’s angles and position to achieve “hollow the chest and round the back” and “relax the waist and drop the hip”.

5. WRH adjusts a participant’s angles and position to feel “light, agile, and qi sunk to dantian”.

In this article, I point out how to incorporate these keys into one’s TCC practice mechanically at the joint level. Teacher Soong JJ singled out nine major joints in the body that are important to TCC practice:
·  Upper three joints (UJ): shoulders, elbows, and wrists
·  Middle two joints (MJ): neck and back spine
·  Lower four joints (LJ): waist (abdomen), hips, knees, and ankles

10 Key
TCC Ten Keys to TCC, some with Wu RH’s paraphrases
focus your attention on these to get the key
1.
Suspend the head from above頂頭懸
Middle joints
·         These six keys train your tangible, physical structure integrity.
·         Practice mindfully and repeatedly, paying attention to changes in your physical structure, sensitivity, lightness, nimbleness, and whole body sensitivity.
·         Over time you develop rootedness, equilibrium, and internal strength.
2.
Hollow the chest and round the back
含胸拔背
Middle joints
3.
Sink the shoulders and elbows (point the elbows downward, not sideways) 沉肩垂肘
Upper joints
4.
Relax the waist and drop the hip (WRH: Loosen the abdomen and tuck in the tailbone)  鬆腰落
Lower joints
5.
Differentiate emptiness from fullness  虛實分清
Entire body + all 9 joints
6.
Seek calmness of mind while moving  動中求靜
Entire body + all 9 joints
7.
Integrate internal and external energy    內外相合

These three keys train the intangible, mindful control of yin and yang.
8.
Sync upper and lower movements
上下相隨
9.
Strive for continuity 相連不斷
10.
Mind governs body 用意不用力
Your mind covers all of you.
